Dr Shanthi Raju, Professor of Geriatric Medicine, Unit Head, Madras Medical College, says that the previous year there were a number of cases of dehydration among the elderly population.

She says, “We see these cases on and off, but in the months of May and June, there is a steep rise. This is largely because elders don’t feel thirst the way youngsters do. They stay off water for longer hours and do not track their water consumption like the way youngsters calculate. It leads to weakness and fainting spells, apart from decreases urine output”.

Other summer diseases ‘Stay hydrated’ is the mantra during this season, says Dr Kannaiyan, Senior Consultant, Apollo Hospitals. He says, “We are seeing a few sporadic cases, apart from viral diseases that are also common during this season.”
