Inspector accused of extortion
In yet another case of extortion filed against the Chennai city police, a mother and her daughter-in-law on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the City Police Commissioner against an Inspector of Fishing Harbour police, alleging that he falsely implicated her son in an illegal liquor selling case, as they failed to pay a bribe of Rs 50,000.

The petitioners alleged that they had paid Rs. 30,000, but the inspector remanded her son Vignesh after implicating him in a false case.Â
However, when contacted, Thomas Xavier, the Inspector attached to the Fishing Harbour police told DT Next that they had intensified action against the illegal sale of liquor ahead of the Assembly elections and Vignesh was caught with 24 bottles of liquor meant for sale.Â
He claimed that Vignesh’s mother Parameshwary was notorious for selling liquor illegally and had around 40 cases filed against her in Kasimedu area.Â
According to the Parameshwary, her son Vignesh was returning home with ten bottles of beer to conduct a party for his friends to celebrate his wife’s pregnancy. The inspector detained him on the way home and demanded Rs 50,000 for his release.Â
