Dealing with sexism in the newsroom
Prajnya Trust, an NGO working towards rights of women and fighting against gender violence, will be hosting a programme called ‘Sexism in Media’, involving three speakers. The event will be held at the Asian College of Journalism on March 11. Ragamalika Karthikeyan, Programme Officer, Prajnya, says why it is important to call out the issue.

Chennai
Was there any particular experience that led you to address the topic of sexism in media?
We at Prajnya Trust have been working closely with the media at several workshops. We realised that while media is being vigilant in many spheres, sexism is still rampant in the newsrooms. We thought it was important to address it.
Who are the speakers and the focus areas?
Three speakers will focus on one specific aspect of sexism each in media, and will come up with a particular idea to counter the issue. Journalist Kavitha Muralidharan will address ‘Everyday Sexism in the newsroom’, another writer-journalist Kavin Malar will talk about ‘Sexist Backlash and how to deal with it’ from her own experience, and filmmaker Uma Vangal will discuss ‘Media Portrayal of Women’.
Who is your audience? Are you planning more events?
Anyone who is interested in the topic. It is open for all. We want to hold similar short takes in future on other topics as well. Going by the response to this session, we will think about holding discussions on related issues.
