Officials begin implementing model code in southern districts
Soon after Election Commission announced dates of polls to five states, officials in southern districts of Tamil Nadu began implementing the model code, including in Tirunelveli, by ordering cleaning of all government premises and walls of posters and banners of political parties.

District collector Karunakaran said all posters on the walls would be removed from today and that public walls should not be used for any poll related advertisements by parties.
They should seek the permission of building owners if they wanted to advertise in private walls.
Meanwhile in Perambalur, distribution of tokens under 'Thalikku thangam' (Gold for mangal sutra) scheme was reportedly distributed hurriedly even as the EC press meet was going on.
A report from Seekazhi said that laying of foundation stone for construction of a Rs 5.30 crore court complex and quarters for employees of the judiciary was held.
Justices Mathivanan and Vimala participated in the bhoomi pooja and foundation laying ceremony.
A report from Pudukottai said that the vice chairman of Pudukottai municipality Abdul Rahman convened an emergency meeting, without even informing the opposition councillors and passed 104 resolutions.
The meeting was held when the municipality chairman was out of town.
Opposition councillors had protested the move of the vice chairman.
