Just a day after a 72-year-old woman was robbed and murdered in Egmore, another armed gang struck at an independent house at Shalimar Gardens, Injambakkam, tied up the family at knife point and decamped with 100 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 60,000 in cash.

According to police, the robbery took place in the early hours of Saturday, when four assailants, three of them wearing masks, first sprayed the guard dogs with some sedative.
Madhumita (25), the younger daughter of Lakshmi Narayanan (61) opened the door on hearing the loud barks of the dogs and the assailants put the knife at her neck and asked her to tie up the third dog, which did not react to the drug that was sprayed on it. Hearing the noise, Madhumita’s elder sister Monisha came out and she was also threatened at knife point.
The assailants entered the house, tied up Monisha, her father Lakshmi Narayanan and mother Vasuki (55) and gagged them with cloth. They then directed Monisha to show them where the valuables were kept.
“They made her open all lockers and bureaus and collected all the gold ornaments. Then they tied Monisha as well, mobile phones of the family members, locked the room and left. The robbery took place between 2.30 am to 3 am, the police said.”
The Pattinampakkam police arrested both the accused from Pattabhiram on Saturday afternoon. Elizabeth (48), wife of Thiraviyaraj (50) was alone when the accused, Saravanan (26) and Nalini (36), came to her house. They had also used Thiraviyaraj’ name, whom Nalini knew personally. Believing their words, Elizabeth went to the kitchen to make tea for them.
Utilising the situation, Saravanan followed and held her at knife-point before robbing the gold that was kept in the house.
Fortunately for the victim, Thiraviyaraj returned home before the thieves could make good their escape. Suddenly Saravanan and Nalini opened the door and rushed out and before Thiraviyaraj could understand what was happening. “Thiraviyaraj was able to identify Nalini as she used to visit his photocopy shop which is located near her daughter’s school,” police said. Later, the duo was nabbed.
