If you live in Nungambakkam, Chetpet or Kilpauk and crib about how this part of the city has never really had its own Farmers Market, then you have a reason to rejoice. Moushmi and Mohan Daniel, who reside in this part of the town will be organising the first edition of The Woodside Farmers Market on Sunday at an independent villa on Harrington Road that’s usually home to social soirees. They plan to make it a monthly event.
“It is a venue for producers and consumers of farm fresh handpicked vegetables, fruits, homemade food, eco-friendly and healthy products to come together, forge relationships and exchange information. The producers can also sell their products directly to consumers,” says Mohan, who runs an event company. He adds that this market is purely out of his passion to connect the community and the farmers. “Much of the food found in grocery stores is highly processed and grown using pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and genetically modified. Some of it is irradiated, waxed or gassed in transit. These practices may have negative effects on human health. We intend to offer the freshest of produce and an array of homemade goodies to people,” says Moushmi.
The Woodside Farmers Market will feature will feature 17 stalls, including parmesan, gouda cheese from Kodaikanal-based Caroselle Dairy Products, fresh and seasonal stock of fruits and vegetables from Farm Fresh Hand Picked in Cumbam, hand-harvested honey from Kodaikanal, red rice batter and the like from Namma Farm in Chennai. It will also feature home-baked cakes and sausages, home-made pickles, theplas and khakras . The Woodside Farmers Market will be held in the open air.
“Wouldn’t you rather stroll amidst stalls of fresh produce on a sunny day than roll your cart around a grocery store? The farmers market is a community hub — a place to meet up with your friends, bring your children and get a taste of small-town life,” says Mohan. The Woodside Farmers Market will be held at PARTY Avenue, Harring ton Road on March 6.
