What is the new campaign about?

For the new road safety campaign, we have few of our volunteers dressed like Yama, the lord of death, who scare people that if they don’t wear the helmet or seatbelt, Yama is going to take their lives. Hopefully, they realise that one day or another someone will have an accident here and our life is going to end. Another volunteer announces the number of people killed on Chennai’s roads, while a few other dressed in bandages educate them on the dos and don’ts of road safety.

How does one enrol with the movement?

All one needs to do is register on Thozhan.org. But before that, one needs to take an oath to follow rules religiously. Because you must be the change you want to see. People need to start considering abiding by the law as a matter of pride and not an obligation.

How has the public awareness grown?

From a four-member team in 2013, today, we are about 3500, with most active members being regular citizens with eight to five jobs. The response has been good as we find more people adhering to rules when we step out every other week. We are engaging kids in the campaign as well because imparting these values at a young age is instrumental.
