Getting Indian cricketers to walk on Anna Salai is unthinkable today, but that is just what Padma Shri awardee DK Srinivasan had done way back in 1984.

DK Srinivasan persuaded Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikkanth and other members of the World Cup winning team to walk on the road in order to raise awareness for the Hindu Mission Hospital, said Srinivasan K Swamy, Chairman, RK Swamy Hansa Group, at a felicitation ceremony for DK Srinivasan, who was recently announced as a Padma Shri awardee. The function was held at the Russian Cultural Centre on Wednesday.

DK Srinivasan, instrumental in setting up the Hindu Mission Hospital and the Valluvar Gurukulam School was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to society. “I dedicate the award to my family, doctors and staff of the hospital,” said Srinivasan.

Swamy also talked about how Srinivasan, who quit the corporate world to dedicate himself to social causes, has turned around the Valluvar Gurukulam School from a dilapidated centre into a state-of-theart school for the underprivileged. “Today there are 3,000 students, three schools and most of the students are first-generation learners. Yet, Srinivasan has ensured excellent infrastructure,” he added.
