The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which recently introduced the personalised take away bedrolls scheme via its website has now simplified the scheme so that passengers can avail the bedroll and blanket kit offline. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had launched the scheme at Chennai Central and Thiruvananthapuram Central, wherein passengers can buy bedroll kit for Rs 140 and blanket kit for Rs 110.
Earlier, passengers with the confirmed tickets had to log in to the site using their PNR number to avail the facility. But now, considering the needs of other passengers, the IRCTC is offering the service over the counter at its office in the Chennai Central Railway Station. “Passengers who wish to buy the kits can now produce their ticket and ID proof at our office and can personally take delivery of the kit before their journey,” DGM of IRCTC Ganapathy told DT Next . For passengers who book online, the kits will be delivered at their berths at the time of journey.
Although passengers who travel in A/C coaches get the bedrolls and blanket for their use, 40% of the bookings for the kits are from these passengers. “These passengers feel that rather than using the used and laundered kits, it is better to avail the brand new ones, which is available at a nominal cost,” the official said and added that there are even passengers from first AC coaches who have availed this service.
