Addressing a meeting organised by the Devendrar Thannarva Arakkattalai (DTA) in the city last night, Mr Singh said there is a procedure to re-designate the title. A legislation has to be moved in Parliament as per the Constitutional requirement. The Centre will send an anthropologists team to study the Devendrakula Vellalar community and based on the team's report, the legislative proposal will be moved in the Parliament, he said.
Mr.Singh said the government is confident that with re-designation, the community will prove its calibre and contribute to nation building.
Speaking on the occasion, M.Thangaraj, President of DTA said the community members are categorised under seven sub-sects of scheduled caste and appealed the Centre to consider them under a single title Devendrakula Vellalar. He also handed over five lakh signatures collected from the community people in 19 districts in the State pressing for their demand.
Mr.Jitendra Singh while accepting the signatures, said he will hand over them to Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
Mr.Amit Shah during a visit to Madurai last year assured the community that its demand would be considered and during September last the community delegation met Mr.Modi in New Delhi in this regard.
