These 100 women achievers were selected by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in collaboration with Facebook through a nationwide contest and public nominations. N. Swarnalatha, the only artist from south India and one of the eight women from Tamil Nadu to have received this honour was excited about the whole meeting. She said, “Not only was the award an honour and tribute to my campaign for social issues through art, but it is a motivation for me to continue with my mission with greater passion and commitment.”

Re-energised, Swarnalatha has returned to Chennai with the coveted award of #100 Women Achievers of India in the category of ‘Arts and Culture’ and says will carry on her work for the cause of women with greater vigour. Talking about the abuse of women in the country, she says, “It affects me mentally and I translate the anguish into art. All the proceeds  from selling my paintings goes towards  supporting women,” she says.

Swarnalatha is not only a versatile artist who has developed her own representations of human figures and figurines, but through her art she raises concerns about several imperative social issues such as crime against women, sexual harassment, infanticide and child abuse as well as substance abuse and environment preservation.
