Smart city project – not many aware of its benefits
Choosing T-Nagar for development under the area initiative in the Smart city project at an estimated Rs.878 crore has resulted in the feeling that the lop sided development of the Greater Chennai will continue

Chennai
The initiative plans to convert the area into a pedestrian retail hub, improve present infrastructure, provide roof top solar systems, manage water better, smoothen traffic flow and improve public transport.
“Why should T-Nagar already developed, be chosen for this initiative when there are many areas in Chennai which urgently need better and improved facilities?” demanded CD Prabhakar (70) of Villivakkam. Varadarajulu (59) of Otteri had the same refrain saying such a move will make south Chennai flourish, while north Chennai will continue to languish.
But what is surprising is that even North Chennai councillors this reporter spoke had only a hazy idea of what the Smart City scheme was really about. They continued to harp on roads and bridges they demanded not yet being provided by the local body. J. Lalitha, ward 20 (Tondiarpet) councillor lamented that when people’s opinions were asked for the smart city scheme “those from south Chennai were more responsive. Local people are not yet aware of working for the common good as even seeking permission for extra space on roads to allow emergency vehicles enter the area had a negative response” she added.
Korukupet ward 41 councillor R. Sasirekha’s father and AIADMK division secretary SV Ravi said north Chennai had developed as evidenced from the fact that Korukkupet flyover would be opened in a few days. “Amma’s schemes are meant for the city and not for a portion. See RK nagar.” he said.
D. Saravanan, ward 46 councillor from Vyasarpadi said suggestions were given at meeting in the area called for by a NGO two months ago. “The area has good roads and only bridges were needed to improve the area”, he added.
Ward 45 councillor, JK Irudayarani also of Vyasarpadi said it was a scheme which could develop Chennai fully, but even “my ward 32 roads are yet to be laid as contractors refuse to take up work citing non-payment of pending dues.”
R. Ezhilarasi ward 1 councillor of Ennore said “the mayor’s reaction to the scheme is our reaction also. What can an individual like me say,” she queried.
