UP gangs suspected for Varma’s abduction
Sreekumar Varma was reportedly offered Rs 20 crore for a portrait done by his great grandfather Raja Ravi Varma.
Chennai
According to highly placed sources some fraudsters had allegedly used the name of Subramaniam Sheshadri, who is said to have had a deal with the brother in law of Sreekumar Varma at Chennai during 1970s and had lured Sreekumar to Dakar.
Sources said the person who was supposed to drop Sreekumar at the Dakar airport for the return flight took a circuitous route to ensure that Sreekumar missed the flight. Sreekumar was then taken to a guest house by the same person, who took away his passport in the guise of getting a fresh ticket. After that he never returned.
Police said some criminal gangs presuming that Sreekumar would have brought the painting along with him to Senegal might have delayed him to the airport. Meanwhile, the external affairs ministry has directed the Chennai CCB to trace three addresses and phone numbers, suspected to be that of some agents based in UP who seemed to have some links behind the episode of Sreekumar’s abduction.
