‘Smart’ T Nagar upsets North Chennai
Choosing T-Nagar for phase I of the Smart City initiative at Rs 878 cr has resulted in the feeling that the development agenda for Greater Chennai is lop-sided.

The plan to include T Nagar in the initiative has not gone down well with north Chennai residents. “Why does T Nagar need further development when there are many parts of Chennai which urgently need better facilities?” asked CD Prabhakar, 70, a long-time resident of Villivakkam.
Surprisingly, even some North Chennai councillors have only a hazy idea of what the Smart City scheme is really about. J Lalitha, Ward 20 (Tondiarpet) councillor lamented that when people’s opinions were asked for the smart city scheme ‘those from south Chennai were more responsive’. “ Ward 45 councillor, JK Irudayarani said, “Roads in my ward are yet to be laid as contractors refuse to take up work citing dues.”
