    In view of Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial day (January 30), a number of events were organised across the city.

    The day started off with leaders across political lines paying floral tributes to the Mahatma’s portrait. Governor Dr K Rosaiah, Minister for Finance and Public Works Departments O Panneerselvam, and Minister for Electricity and Prohibition and Excise Natham R.Viswanathan, participated in the ceremony among other leaders. 

    The Gandhi World Foundation (GOF) organised Chennai Walkathon 2016 at the Marina beach to commemorate the 68th memorial anniversary of Gandhiji. 

    The walkathon attended by over 2000 participants was also aimed at creating awareness about disaster management and preservation of water resources apart from promoting the benefits of walking. In another event, members of the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan chanted slogans to lay emphasis on spinning yarn and weaving khadi. 

    The day was also marked by the People’s Movement Against Liquor and Drugs raising slogans demanding a ban on liquor in the state.
