Robin Mein, four others found guilty after three decades

Of the 16 accused, the XI additional City and Sessions Judge K Venkatasamy trying CBI cases relating to bank and financial institutions found Robin Maine and four others guilty. The case saw the CBI filing charge-sheet against 32 accused in 1987. Of them, 16 were either absconding or dead.  Robin Maine has been sentenced to undergo 7 years RI and a pay fine of Rs 1.08 crore while the 2nd accused Suryakumar has been given 4 years RI and a fine of Rs 29.6 Lakh.  Similarly, Shahul Hammed and Basinben were sentenced to undergo 2 years RI and pay a fine of Rs 4.75 and Rs 1.67 lakh respectively. 

The fifth accused Somasundaram has been directed to undergo 3 years RI and pay a fine of Rs 20.25 lakh. In all out of the total fine of Rs.167 Cr, the court directed the payment of Rs.57 lakh to compensate the nationalised banks.

 In 1983, Kalimuthu, as the agriculture minister, allegedly directed various nationalised banks to provide loans worth Rs 56 lakh to Robin and others. He also deposited funds belonging to the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board with nationalised banks. 

In 1985, CBI started investigation and as per the prosecution, Robin and some of the other accused submitted forged documents to avail loans for purchasing farm tractors.
