Mohamed Yunus, who received the gallantry medal during the 67th Republic Day celebrations, said the recent floods made him realise that there was more to life than materialistic goals

Mohamed Yunus, a youngster who saved hundreds of people during the floods, said that he didn’t expect to win the prestigious honour of a gallantry medal from the CM for what he felt was his duty. “It was a great feeling to receive the award from Honourable CM J Jayalalithaa. It has inspired me to do bigger things for the society. There are so many youngsters out there, who want to contribute to the society but they have no platform or opportunities.
We are working towards creating a social service network, a sort of political tool, where youngsters can share ideas, volunteer and work for the betterment of our nation,” he said. Yunus revealed that he was touched when a couple, who he rescued during the floods, named their girl child after him.
“All this while, I was only trying to work hard, get a good job and earn money. But rescuing people during the flood and their kind gestures made me realise that there is more to life than just making money.
This has inspired me to really do more for the society,” said this youngster, who loves to travel. Speaking about his next venture – a social service network, Yunus said it was an initiative aimed at engaging youngsters into social and political participation. The co-founder of the start-up venture, added that he is happy that his work has inspired many other youngsters.
“I have seen the power of youngsters during the floods. It should not just be me but everybody else too, doing their bit for our society. There is a lot of potential in our youngsters,” he concluded.
