What is the idea behind the Bird Race?

The idea is to inculcate a new hobby and in the process educate the participants about the need to protect the environment. Also, one gets to interact with and learn from a healthy mix of experienced bird watchers, amateurs and budding birdwatchers. And apart from being relaxing, it’s an inexpensive way to keep yourself entertained.

    How is the race conducted?

It’s a race to record (spot) as many number of bird species as possible from dusk to dawn. There will be 40 teams of four members each, who will be given a list of available species of birds and areas where they can be spotted. However, there are no bounds when it comes to the location. Later in the evening, the teams will gather at a common place where we will have an expert judge who will decide upon the authenticity of the birds spotted and award the winners thereafter.

What does one require to be part of the competition?

Patience, passion and basic knowledge about birds. Speaking about knowledge, the younger generation is very well informed and enthusiastic about birding, as opposed to the popular notion that birding is for the old. As a matter of fact, more than 50 per cent of our participants last year were in the age group of 18 to 25.
