Enrolment drive kicks off in city colleges
As political parties get into poll mode and invite cadre to apply for contesting the forthcoming elections to Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Tamil Nadu Election Commission on Friday kicked off an ambitious drive to enrol college students and first time voters by facilitating the same at Ethiraj College in Chennai
Chennai
“It will take a couple of days before we enrol the eligible voters in that college. After that, we will move to other colleges with our plan of covering all the colleges in the state,” said Rajesh Lakhoni, the State’s Chief Electoral Officer. The fresh enrolment drive comes after election officials found that according to their estimate, close to six lakh youngsters in the age group of 18 to 19 were eligible to vote for the first time.
This figure was estimated after taking the 2011 census as the base for calculating the franchise age of the youth population. Lakhoni said the process of enrolment is fully automated and does not take more than ten minutes for a person to complete the application process.
“While we are taking the enrolment process to colleges to save precious study time of students, the facility is open to all those who are not on electoral rolls. Anyone can approach a net centre, log onto to http://www. elections.tn.gov.in/ and complete the process of enrolment,” said Lakhoni.
