Criminals smuggle in guns from Bihar, UP

The criminal gangs in Chennai have moved ahead from the ‘aruval’ gang image. Now, according to police sources, their most preferred weapon is country-made guns. Police had recently arrested Thangaraj, a notorious criminal and also a wholesale dealer of such weapons in Tamil Nadu from Coimbatore. But the criminal gangs have other ways to procure such illegal weapons from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for prices ranging between Rs 4,000 and 20,000. 

“After the arrest of Thangaraj, there is no organised set up working in Tamil Nadu for procurement of such weapons. However, the criminal gangs, especially those in Chennai, are getting a steady supply of such weapons,” a senior police official said. Police sources said the criminal gangs are now using truck drivers from these states as medium to get the arms delivered. “The country-made guns we seize from the criminal gangs are all made either in Bihar or UP. Some gangs also purchase them from Mumbai,” the official added. 

However, police sources said the potential of these arms was lesser. “The fatalities would be higher, had guns used by criminals were better,” official added.
