To ease the crowds due to Kaanum Pongal, the State government had earlier announced that MTC would operate an additional 200 special buses to Marina beach, Vandaloor and Mahabalipuram, where locals throng to celebrate Kaanum Pongal. According to MTC officials, they usually operated special buses during Kaanum Pongal.
Similarly, 200 additional buses would ply to various places like Golden Beach and other important places today.
“It is a fact that we should ease crowds during such festivals. Normally about 3600 MTC buses are operated. Further, the government considered this festival to operate additional buses,” said an MTC official, seeking anonymity. He added that buses would ply in main areas like Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), Thiruvanmaiyur, Thirunindravur and T. Nagar.
The officials also said, “We are exploring the possibility of operating around 100 AC buses.” Last year MTC operated 200 special buses.
