PMK opposes Kerala police station near Mullaiperiyar dam
Reiterating his demand for deployment of central forces for the safety of the Mullaiperiyar dam, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss on Monday sought the Centre’s intervention on Kerala government opening a new police station near the dam
Chennai
In a statement, Dr Ramadoss said the Kerala government’s move would result in unnecessary tension in the area. Claiming that the opening of a new police station under the guise of giving protection to the dam was aimed at scuttling the maintenance works being carried out by Tamil Nadu, he said the idea of the Kerala government was to create fear in the minds of the Tamil Nadu officials by deploying a huge police force at the new station.
Recalling the plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government in the Supreme Court seeking deployment of central forces to protect the dam, Dr Ramadoss said since the arguments put forth by the state were very strong and valid, Kerala had on July last year announced in its State assembly that it would set up a police station to provide security to the dam and also informed the Apex court about it.
‘’At a time when the case is expected to come up for hearing in the Supreme Court, the Kerala government in a bid to scuttle deployment of Central forces to the dam, has opened a new police station’’, he added.
The Tamil Nadu Government should draw the Supreme Court’s attention in this regard and that the Centre should not remain a mute spectator as the Kerala government’s move would create needless tension. The Central Government should immediately intervene and stop opening of the police station and take steps to deploy central forces as security to the dam, Dr Ramadoss added.
