    Indo-Japanese Coast Guard exercise off Marina on January 15

    On January 15, the coast of Chennai will witness the prowess and strategic potential of Indian and Japanese Coast Guards as they together try to rescue a merchant ship from the “hijackers.”

    The Japanese Coast Guard ship Echigo will be in Chennai to take part in the Indo-Japan  exercise ‘Sahyog-Kaijin XV’ from January 10 to 16 and the Indian fighter jets and Coast Guard will also showcase their prowess to their Japanese counterparts during the operation. 

    According to a press release from the Coast Guard here, Indian Coast Guard helicopters will operate from the Japanese Coast Guard Ship and vice versa during the rescue operation. Other highlights of the operation will be cross deck landing, interdiction of pirate vessel, cross boarding, SAR demonstration, stream past and external fire-fighting, the release added. 

    The Director General of Indian Coast Guard, Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, and vice commandant of Japanese Coast guard, Vice Admiral Hideyo Hanamizu would be present at the joint exercise at the Marina on January 15. 

    During their stay at Chennai the Japan Coast Guard personnel would play a friendly volley ball match with their Indian counterparts, call on important dignitaries and will visit the Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Paharedar. Indian Coast Guard personnel will also get a chance to get on board of the Japanese Coast Guard ship Echigo. 

    The aim of the exercise was to strengthen the working level relationship between the two coast guards and to further refine joint operation procedures, the press release added
