‘Healing Autism’, a threeday conference presented by Mythily Chari and Commandur Foundation aims to look at the lives of children with autism in a new light. With over 75 parents from across Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad attending, the event comprises a series of lectures on topics related to autism. Issues include preparedness of teachers and intervention of experts collaborating alongside children with autism.

    Shift in perception

Autism is not a disease or a disorder, says Mythily Chari, founder trustee, Commandur Foundation. “Parents tend to think their child will be normal and compare him or her with others who are. This seminar aims to debunk that myth.

We want parents to understand that children with autism have their own specialities and their understanding is much more than what we perceive. They are normal too. There is no right or wrong behaviour,” says Mythily who has been working in the field for over 30 years. She adds that today, there are one out of 88 people with autism, but the number will grow.

With growing awareness about the condition and more avenues to find therapists, parents can now build on their wisdom, says Girija Sriram, mother of Aishwarya (34), a puzzle expert.

Moderating a session at the workshop, Girija says parents play a big role in bringing out their child’s talent. “Look for their skills and tap it. Autism is a lifelong journey. We as parents have to consciously embark on it to understand it completely,” she sums up.
