Though the hoax call was originally made to a school in Kelambakkam, a miscreant used Whatsapp to circulate the message  among mobile users in Chennai, resulting in widespread panic  “None of the schools in Chennai city received a bomb threat call. The parents panicked and rushed to take their children from schools. We cannot trace the origin of a message on Whatsapp and thus we cannot take action against the person who spread this hoax message,” a senior police official attached to the City Cyber Crime Branch told DT Next

It may be recalled that there was a proposal to  bring the Whatsapp services under their scanner, it was shot down. Meanwhile, Kelambakkam police said the cyber-crime wing is trying to trace the caller who had made a call to the school. “Investigation is on but we have not traced the caller yet,” a Kelambakkam police official said.
