With uncertainty still looming over conducting jallikattu (bull-taming) events in Tamil Nadu, members of the Satta Panchayat Iyakkam (SPI), jal likattu enthusiasts, bull tamers and a large number of local people, including women and children were observing a day’s fasting protest, demanding the Centre to promulgate an urgent Ordinance to lift the ban on the event at Avaniyapuram, here today.

The protestors were also demanding the Centre for de-notification of bulls from the list of performing animals.  Decorated bulls were also brought to the fasting venue at Mandaiveli by bull-rearers to register their protest.

Similar fasting agitation was being observed by members of Peoples Welfare Front (PWF) comprising MDMK, VCK, CPI and CPM at Alanganallur, where the world-renowned jal likattu event was being held every year.  The Alanganallur jallikattu event attracts a sizeable number of tourists from various foreign countries.
