Over 150 companies are expected to recruit more than 1,000 students from the institute this season. In the drive that began on Dec 1 at the IIT-M, six companies offered five job offers to students for their international operations during the graveyard session (00.01 hrs – 07.00 hrs). While the forenoon session saw 85 job offers from 18 companies and the afternoon session had 26 offers from 8 companies. The first day ended with a total of 116 job offers from 32 companies.

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras administration had to postpone the process after rains and subsequent floods devastated the city early December. With the revised schedule, the placement process is all set to begin again on January 6. The placement office will conduct two sessions per day for the first five days from January 6. There will be no interviews on January 11 and from January 12 to 14, there will be only one session a day from 10 am to 5 pm.

Speaking to DTNext on Saturday, Prof Babu Viswanathan, advisor, (training and placement) at IIT-Madras said that job offers awarded to students on day one exceeded their expectations. “We were expecting close to 100 job offers on day one but we crossed that figure at the end of the day. We have sent invitations to the companies informing them about the revised schedule and they have also agreed to take part in the placement process from January 6,” he said.

About 1,300 students (B Tech, B Tech (dual), MS & PhD) registered for placement with 266 companies accepting to recruit students from the institute this year as against 221 companies last year. A total of 129 start-up companies registered this year vis- à-vis 56 last year, and offered 198 job profiles as against 85, which has more than doubled this year.

    Graveyard slots

The five companies that recruited students in the graveyard slots on December 1 (day 1) were Microsoft, Oracle, VISA, Google & Bloomberg, with Bloomberg being a new entrant for the session. This year about 20 students at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras have deferred their placements to pursue higher studies or take up entrepreneurship. Placements in all older Indian Institutes of Technology start on December 1 as a practice for last couple of years.

This year, the Indian Institutes of Technology have also decided that they would not disclose salary package offered by the company to a student, in public domain as they feel that students were put to immense peer and parental pressure.
