Volunteers distribute relief to those affected by the floods

Chennai

I decided to bring together a number of people through a well-coordinated campaign. As Chennai was reeling under the worst-ever floods, we carried out relief work with the sole intent to help the poor and the worst hit by the deluge. I decided to help the community by bringing together many like-minded people in the world.

Our group including my family (Lawanya, Thilagavathy, Prathyush, Pravan) and friends (Venugopal, Vinod, Sekar, Roop, Yogesh etc) and a number of other people decided to join hands. We started collecting funds in our colony spread across three streets to prepare food for 3,000 people. We provided food to residents in Padi, Korattur, Manali new town, Idayanchavadi and Jafferkhanpet. We received a lot of help from many daily labourers, who pitched in by providing vegetables and helped us in cooking. A temple provided the space and support. This act inspired us and kept our motivation levels up and high. We later reached out to other overseas friends — in Chennai and abroad, who volunteered to extend their support through contributions. We began carrying out post-flood relief on December 13 and our field analysis helped us to focus only on the families who were struggling to recover from the disaster. So far, more than 1,500 families have benefited. As part of our relief operations we distributed dresses, napkins, provisions, notebooks, mats, water, towels, blankets, basic medicines, etc.

We have covered Chepakkam Village and  Mouthambedu Village (near Nandiambakkam), Ambedkar Nagar, Balaji Nagar and Erikarai near Minjur-Ponneri. We also reached out to families on the roadside in Paruthipattu, in and around Thiruverkadu, Aynambakkam, Ayyappakam and Nolambur.
