Anna University to get Rs 75 cr for research
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has selected Anna University for UPE (University with Potential for Excellence) status which will enable the university to get Rs.75 crore funds for research and society oriented products

Addressing students and faculty at Anna University at a function to present awards to best community radio programme & short film on ‘hand washing & sanitation’ on Monday, UGC vice-chairman Prof. H. Devaraj said that Anna University was a pioneer in the field of technology. To foster research, the Commission chose Anna University for the UPE status after a rigorous selection process lasting a year.
“We (UGC) want Anna University to develop products that will help society and we will make Anna University a role model for the country. The funds are part of the 12th five-year plan grants,” he said. It may be noted that University of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj University from Tamil Nadu already enjoy UPE status in the previous 12th fiveyear plans.
Later, speaking to reporters, Prof. Devaraj said that UGC in the recent commission metting accorded 12 (B) status to the Chennai based Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU), which would help them get UGC funds for research and infrastructure development.
The Kodaikanal based Mother Teresa Women’s University has been asked to conduct the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) in Tamil Nadu for those who aspire to be faculty in colleges and universities, he added.
