    3kg gold seized from woman flier on wheelchair

    In the continuing seizures of gold at Chennai and Tiruchy, totally eight kg were seized in two different incidents on Monday

    While three kg of gold was seized from a Myanmar woman arriving from Kuala Lampur at Chennai airport, another 5 kg was seized in Tiruchy. According to sources, officials at the Chennai airport checked a wheel-chair bound  Myanmar woman, Noorjahan (54), a flier from Kuala Lumpur on suspicion. During the search, it was found that she was carrying 3 kg gold with her.

    Officials seized the entire quantity, sources added. In another drive at Tiruchy airport, DRI sleuths confiscated gold weighing around 5 kg worth Rs 1 crore from a flight that arrived from Malaysia. Sources said that the sleuths acting on a tip off checked 2 passengers who arrived at Tiruchy from Chennai and seized the 5 kg gold from their possession.

    Totally 21 fliers who travelled from Malaysia alighted at Chennai. Another group of 21 occupied their seats from Chennai and headed to Tiruchi in the same flight. The DRI team, which got a tip that gold was being smuggled in the Malaysian flight, thoroughly frisked all the passengers.

    During the drive, they found two persons carrying around 5 kg of smuggled gold and seized it. Officials put the value of the smuggled metal at Rs 1.20 crore. After the CBI raids on customs offices at Chennai airport recently, every day at least one case of gold seizure is being reported in the State.
