Rain threat continues in coastal Tamil Nadu

As per the Meteorological Centre, the recently-formed low depression over the Arabian Sea had moved towards south-west Arabian Sea due to which there was no heavy rainfall in parts of the state. The recent rain was due to low depression formed over Comorin Sea and it is still stable in the region for three days. So, there could be considerable rainfall on Thursday in coastal districts of TN excluding Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. The rainfall would gradually decrease in coming days. Chennai could experience, light rainfall on Thursday. The director said the average rainfall during the northeast monsoon in TN was 39 cm. But this year, it had 65 cm (64% increase) so far. The same way Chennai district received 161 cm against its average rainfall of 71 cm during the monsoon, which is 128% increase so far.

The district Collectors of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have announced that schools and colleges would be closed till December 13. It may be recalled that torrential rain resulted in heavy flooding of residential areas in Chennai and the neighbouring districts, leading to local people being put to untoward hardship. 

With schools being inundated and the rains continuing, there was no possibility of allowing students to attend classes, officials said. It is said that efforts are now underway to remove stagnant water and educational institutions are closed to ensure that this activity is carried out successfully.
