Running for relief
The desperation of flood victims for food, water and essentials showed through clearly as they were seen running after relief vans and practically jumping into, and clinging onto the vehicles anxious to get their share of food and clothing.
Chennai
At MKB Nagar, a van stopped near a small group of people, and even as the volunteers started to hand out packets of buns and biscuits, the group grew into a small mob and the van was almost pushed over by people who scrambled to get in. A similar scene was witnessed at Vyasarpadi. The tempo traveller that carried packets of food and water drove off with a few people still clinging onto the vehicle hoping to get some more hand-outs.
Nimisha Andrews, an advertising professional who has been actively volunteering to help the flood victims said, “The crowds have become almost uncontrollable. Earlier, they were in shock, and we needed to coax them to eat, but now their survival instinct has kicked in, they are getting quite aggressive with us.”
