The intersection that branches off Race Course Road into Five Furlong Road, Chakrapani Road and the Maduvankarai Flyover near Guindy was choked from 6 pm to 9:45 pm on Tuesday.

According to commuters, the nearby subways, including the Alandur-St Thomas Mount Subway and the Thillai Ganga Nagar subway were submerged with rain water.

Owing to this several, motorists had taken a long diversion and opted to go through Adambakkam and GST Road to get to their respective destinations. Heading the group of volunteers was Shashank V, an accounts service manager, at Vodafone. He tells us, “Our team was just about to leave from work when we noticed chaos on the roads. We found three traffic policemen struggling to manage the chaos. So we decided to step.”

The crew came in for great praise, not just from motorists passing by, but even from the traffic policemen manning these junctions. Venkatesan, a traffic constable stationed at Guindy tells us, “Despite us policemen doing our best, we were finding it daunting to control the traffic tonight. Thanks to this team, this congestion was cleared in three hours.”

The youngsters have planned to make their contribution a weekly affair.
