DMK donates 1 cr for flood relief
President of the DMK Karunanidhi has announced that Rs one crore would be donated towards flood relief to the government of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai
The DMK party leader said, “DMK is donating Rs 1 crore towards grievance relief fund, handing it over to the government. The government’s announcement of relief amount of Rs 500 crore seems to be quite less, when compared to the huge loss caused by the monsoon.
The state government should seek huge amount of relief with centre’s aid out of National Disaster Management Fund and collect funds from rich and affluent sections to augment more funds.” The former Chief Minister also requested the DMK cadres to form committees to organise donation camps and distribute relief supplies to the public.
Vijayakanth criticises regime
The DMDK president Vijayakanth said that funds allocated and spent in past does not resolve the flood issue. In his statement, Vijayakanth said that though the CM visited few parts of her constituency, she doesn’t seem to be fully aware of the problems that arise out of floods. “The CM claims that within a day 27 to 33 cms of rain poured and it is difficult to avoid damages. She said the same thing in 2005.
So, nothing has been done in 10 years? What happened to the Rs 5,000 crores allocated for the purpose?” he said, adding, “Government should remove encroachments in and around water bodies and speed up the relief process.”
