The north-east monsoons have resulted in an increase in water levels at the Puzhal lake. After a couple of days of heavy rains, the water levels went up to 779 cu.ft of water. In order to prevent the submersion of the electric motors located inside the tank, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has taken steps to remove the motors. The 11 motor pumps located there play an important role in providing drinking water to the city.

Puzhal lake is one of the main rain-fed reservoirs from where water is drawn for supply to Chennai city. According to reports, the water levels at other reservoirs, Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Cholavaram, are rising as well.
