Chennai
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today reviewed the relief measures undertaken in the rain-battered districts of the State, which resulted in the Northeast monsoon becoming active in the State. The meeting was held at the State Secretariat in which senior Ministers of her Cabinet, and Secretaries of various departments and other officials participated.
Jayalalithaa advised officials to speed up the relief works in rain and flood-hit areas, especially in the coastal district of Cuddalore, which bore the brunt of the rains. The heavy rains, which had battered several districts of the State under the influence of a deep depression that crossed the Cuddalore coast on Monday night, left a trail of destruction in the district leading to floods.
Death toll
Death toll rose to 28 in Cuddalore district. Several rain related deaths were reported from across the district as a result of the ravaging floods that inundated most villages. Strong winds accompanying the rains uprooted trees and damaged electric poles.
The National Disaster Management Authority has been pressed into service for rescue and relief works on a war footing, District Collector Dr C Suresh Kumar said. The district administration declared a holiday on Thursday for the govt and private schools and colleges due to non-stop rains.
