    Chennai city flooded, Met dept forecasts more rains over the week

    A low pressure area brought heavy rains to the city, the first heavy Northeast monsoon showers for this month. The Met department has forecast heavy rains in the coming days.

    A day before Deepavali, last minute shoppers on Sunday had to wade through flooded roads in many areas as the skies opened up. Normal life in the city and its suburbs was affected. According to, Director, Met department, SR Ramanan said a prevailing trough could form into a cyclone. This will bring heavy rainfall or thunderstorms to the north coastal districts of the state, he added.

    As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky would appear cloudy with intermittent rains or thunderstorms. He said the city will witness strong winds. The rains caused people, much inconvenience. Villivakkam, Padi, Perambur, Ayanavaram and Pulianthoppu were inundated. In Villivakkam, traffic came to a standstill as vehicles had to inch their way through pot-holed roads. Fire rescue personnel were pressed into relief after a tree was uprooted in Anna Nagar.

    People had a tough time leaving their homes. Corporation workers had to siphon off the rain water from the choked drains with the help of locals in the area, including youngsters. A resident of High Court Colony, advocate George said that clogging of sewage was common in the area during the rainy season but a proper drainage system was necessary and the height of the low roads had to be raised.
