Citizen Connect: Corporation stumped as residents dump garden waste on EVK Sampath Road

Unchecked dumping of garbage and garden waste on EVK Sampath Road has created a traffic bottleneck near the Vepery High Road junction. Though this has caused traffic impediments during the peak hours, the residents near the dumping spot are riled that the Greater Chennai Corporation has failed to find a permanent solution to the problem.

“The residents from other nearby areas are dumping their garden waste on EVK Sampath Road. Conservancy workers of the Chennai Corporation only remove garbage dumped inside two garbage bins at the spots, leaving the garden waste behind,” said a security guard of a nearby building.

When DT Next visited the spot, several tree branches and other waste were found dumped around the garbage bins, blocking the road. Unused lids of manhole were also seen on the pavement, impeding the pedestrians from crossing the area.

The security guard, who did not want to be named, said that the spot was relatively clean till a few weeks ago. “But all of sudden, the residents started to dump garden waste on the spot,” he added.

Making the situation worse, the workers who are employed in the construction of storm water drain, are staying along the road by erecting temporary sheds. These sheds have come up right opposite to the dumping spot.

“Due to a large volume of waste dumped just a few metres away from a traffic signal, vehicle movement is affected. There are chances of mishaps. The civic body should take measures to prevent dumping of garden waste on the road,” said M Sasikumar, a motorist.

Some residents said that the civic workers were removing the garden waste from spot every now and then but it is in vain as the dumpingis continuing.

The workers are removing the garden waste once in a few days, not on a daily basis, pointed out a local resident. “But the residents continue to dump the garden waste along the road. The issue can be addressed only if the civic body finds permanent solution,”residents added.

When contacted a Chennai Corporation official, he blamed the residents who dump the waste on the road and assured measures to curb the practice. The official said the compactor garbage lorries deployed by the Corporation, which is mechanised to lift the bins and dump the waste into the lorries, cannot remove waste dumped outsidethe bins.

“If the garbage dumped around bins is a lesser quantity, our workers will remove by hands. But for garden waste, we have to use tipper lorries,” the official explained.
