Slice of Life: ‘Want my son to be knowledgeable so that he can do well anywhere’

Chennai

I came to Chennai three weeks ago. I am from Assam, but I have been travelling across the country. I went to Kolkata, then Sikkim, then Hyderabad, and finally, Chennai. People here don’t speak Hindi at all – in Assam people do speak Assamese, but Hindi is more widespread.

I graduated in Economics, and back home, I run a tea garden. There are some farmhands that tend to the plants during season. The plant must be handled very delicately, and a good harvest will sell for thousands of rupees. Now, however, it’s the off season, and my brother suggested that I travel instead of wasting time at home. So I’ve been going around the country, seeing what different places have to offer.

And, since I’ve never been to Chennai, I decided to come here. Assam is still developing. I come from a rural area, and Guwahati is still new to facilities like petrol pumps. The first petrol pump is being established only now, and I want to learn how the systems operate so that I can go home and work there during the off-season.

My son is at home, waiting for me. He is in Class 9 and he loves to study. He is also a class topper and gets full marks in almost all subjects. I have enrolled him in a good English-medium school. English is the language that makes the world spin, and if he wants to do well, he must be well-versed in it. I want my son to have a rich mind. I want him to know that his occupation doesn’t matter. As long as his mind is healthy and full of knowledge, he will be able to do well anywhere in the world.
