Locals claim that the roads were relaid only during local body polls

“This road has remained damaged for more than a month and recent showers have made it worse. Overflowing sewage makes it difficult for commuters and residents. Water stagnates on the road and causes traffic jams at peak hours even after a short spell of rain. The public is forced to walk in the stagnant water mixed with sewage,” said Krishna Kumar, a motorist from Guindy.

Another commuter, Murugesan P, who uses the stretch every day, said that people from neighbouring areas like Nanganallur and Alandur use the road extensively. The battered road poses threat to motorists. “We have filed a complaint to the Corporation official, but nothing has been changed. The residents are also concerned about dilapidated electric poles in their neighbourhood. We don’t want any mishap to happen,” he said.

Locals complained that the road’s condition worsened after the recent spell of rain and the potholes were filled with water, thus making commuting risky. “Every day, I commute through Vembuli Amman Koil Road. My body aches after riding on the stretch. It has a lot of potholes and I have also witnessed at least two to three minor accidents in a week. It is a busy stretch since there are many shops and schools in the locality,” said Kalaiaran R, another motorist.

He added that Corporation officials should consider either re-laying the road or filling the potholes. Even though they have complained to the councillors and other authorities, no action has been taken till now, he said.

Locals added that the roads are re-laid only during local body elections. “Only local body elections can find a solution to this problem. Until then, motorists would face difficulties to commute through this road,” said Ravi E, a shopkeeper.

When contacted, the Corporation official said that the road will be relaid soon.
