I was born and raised in erstwhile Madurai, in a small taluk called Nilakkottai.

Like any person raised in small towns, I have valued attributes like punctuality and commitment. So, when I made a commitment to introduce music to the lives of children with autism, I knew I would stick to it.

I stumbled upon autism and the impact music, especially ragams, have on those with the condition, almost 15 years ago. Singing to children in a special school located near my home, it was a voluntary service I hoped to render. To my surprise, it made a lot of difference to them and those with autism, who remained excluded from gathering and public.

When I couldn’t go for the classes due to illness for a few days, I was told by the teachers that the children sang the bhajans when it was time for my session. I was surprised, as during session they never paid attention and would seem busy with other activities.

Starting then, I have been training children with autism in bhajans. I have an art based therapy centre exclusively for children with autism in Keelkattalai. From children as young as three to adults aged 45, I now have a set of 40 students.

As much as 99 per cent of these people show a deep interest in music. The family can spot this interest and help them develop it. Apart from being therapeutic, music helps them concentrate and focus. I have released albums with them and I am all set for the launch of the fifth album later this month.
