The Tamil Nadu Secretariat, which functions inside the St.George Fort is the official power centre of the state where the office of all the top secretaries are present. People visiting the Secretariat usually adhere to a ‘decent’ dress code where the officials visiting are in formals while the politicians are seen in white clad dhotis.
Recently, this reporter was about to leave the Secretariat when he noticed a couple from a foreign country engaged in a heated argument with the security staff. Upon asking, he was told that the couple had an appointment to meet an official, but the security staff at the entrance of the Secretariat refused to allow them in as the man was wearing shorts.
The security guard was heard telling them that according to the dress code of the Secretariat, people wearing shorts are not allowed inside. The couple in turn were helpless as they did not have an alternate set of clothes and they were late for their meeting.
The argument did not get resolved, but as this scribe was leaving, he overheard someone advise the man to get a vesti and wrap it around his waist! Now that’s a true ‘short’-cut solution to a long debate.
