“Gautham and I have collaborated since Minnale for Kaakha Kaakha, Vaaranam Aayiram, and Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya among others. He has immense knowledge of music and his collaborations with Ilaiyaraja, AR Rahman and Harris stand proof to it. We also collaborated when I composed indie songs for his channel Ondraaga Entertainment. So, when he asked me if I could come on board for Joshua as the music director, I gladly agreed. We know each other’s work,” he says. Gautham Menon’s films are mostly musicals in which the songs are interwoven into the narrative. Karthik says that Joshua too will be a musical and is indeed a huge responsibility. “I’d be lying if I tell you that I was confident as soon as I was approached. When I debuted as a composer in Aravaan, music was different and the audience was in a different frame of mind. Now, it has evolved. Even if I deliver a neat song, people should accept it. I can give them a good song, but the success of it isn’t in my control. That way, Naan Un Joshua is a melodious number that will be sung from the hero of the film, Varun’s perspective. Vignesh Shivn has penned the lyrics and I am sure it will resonate with people,” explains Karthik.

The song is also crooned by him, a veteran of 5,000 songs to date. “Having worked with stalwarts like Ilaiyaraja and Rahman, I can surely say that singing for another composer is much easier. They give us the track and we sing it and walk away with the credit. However, singing for my own composition is a different ball game. The music is my baby here and I should be extra cautious of the output.”

The composer says that a few other songs are under production and will be announced soon. “This lockdown has kept me busy working on the Joshua album. Apart from that, there is a lot I have learned in this period. It took one virus to teach us about values and expenditure. Moreover, it is good that people have reduced eating outside food and have resorted to home-cooked food,” he concludes.
