    Thirteen years ago, Venkat Prabhu’s directorial debut, Chennai 28 released in theatres and went on to become a runaway hit.

    Featuring an ensemble cast including, Jai, Shiva, Premji, Aravind Akash, Nithin Sathya with other new actors, and with music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film won love from audience for its hilarious take on street cricket and friendship.

    To mark the anniversary of its release, Venkat thanked the producer SP Charan and shared a fan-made poster on Twitter and wrote, “Wow 13 years of Chennai 28, thanks to one and all for the love for the movie and for us! Owe u SPb Charan na!” (sic).

    Speaking to DT Next, Venkat said, “It is very heartwarming to see that fans still love and remember the movie even after so many years.” A sequel for the film, Chennai 600028 II: Second Innings, released in 2016 to positive reviews. Asked if the director planned to expand the franchise further, Venkat said, “If there is any interesting script, then we might consider but there are no such ideas at the moment.” On projects he is working on, Venkat said that he was directing a web series for Hotstar that has Kajal Agarwal, Vaibhavi, Kayal Anandhi in lead roles. “The title and details of the series will be announced by Hotstar soon. We are currently dubbing it in over seven languages,” he added.

    The director also said that the release date for his movie, Party, would be announced once theatres reopen. Venkat said, “We had started shooting Maanaadu with Simbu and shot for 15 days. However, the production was called off due to the pandemic.”

    On a concluding note, VP said with a laugh. “I am just travelling from my bedroom to kitchen, spending time with my family and staying safe.”
