Sporting a long hair and a built physique, GV Prakash meets us at a city hotel to talk about his Hollywood debut Trap City. “It was a wonderful experience to collaborate with talents like Ricky Burchell, the director, rapper Brandon T Jackson and Dennis White. I also got to see how their production is streamlined. Unlike our sets, they shoot using live sounds and they do not prompt dialogues. It was Sarvam Thaala Mayam that taught me to work with live sounds,” says the composer-actor. Talking about his role in Trap City, GV says, “I play a surgeon in the film. I did a research for my part to look natural. I watched videos of surgeons on You Tube. Also, I didn’t want to deliver dialogues in a fake American accent. I have spoken English the way I usually do.” The producer of the film Tel Ganesan walks in and calls GV Prakash, the heartthrob of Hollywood. GV laughs, “It was Tel Ganesan who gave me tips to become the Hollywood heartthrob. He is already one in the US.”

Talking about striking a fine balance between music and acting in the last few months, GV says, “I have learnt to say ‘no’ to quite a lot of people of late. I think that is the reason I have good films in my kitty. Earlier, I was a person who didn’t want to disappoint people by refusing movie offers. Now, I accept a film only when my character is substantial and the story has some depth to it.” His collaborations with Vetri Maaran for Asuran and Sudha Kongara for Soorarai Potru and Karthick Naren’s upcoming film with Dhanush have intrigued his fans and movie buffs. “Asuran marked the start of a great year for my career. I have Vaadivaasal with Vetri Maaran coming up. Vetri and I grew together in the industry. Then there is Soorarai Pottru with Sudha Kongara. She is more of an elder sister to me. I was an assistant to AR Rahman while Sudha akka was assisting Mani Ratnam. We have known each other for the last 17 years. Then there is D43 with Karthick Naren, one of the promising new-gen filmmakers in Kollywood. He has proved his mettle with Dhuruvangal 16 and the anticipation around his upcoming Mafia is also growing ahead of its release,” he says. GV adds that his upcoming films Jail and Ayngaran in which he plays the lead also have some substance in them. Tel Ganesan, who keeps looking at GV says, “This is why we brought him on board for Trap City. He can compose, act and sing. Hollywood needs such talents.”
