“Earlier KD also dealt with involuntary euthanasia or a traditional senicide. I have heard about the film though I haven’t watched it. I was inspired by a couple of episodes of Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate in which he had discussed about Thalaikoothal in detail. This is a practice that doesn’t happen only in Tamil Nadu. It happens across India in remote villages. I did my research and wanted to make this into a documentary. However, I believed that the message needs to be conveyed on a bigger platform. So I wrote the script in a little less than 20 days,”she said.
The film boasts of a cast of 80 members. “I could have cast stars to take the film to a wider section of the audience but I felt that the message will be subdued. I conducted workshops and chose people who I believed will justify the story. When a film has a good content, the audience supports it irrespective of who the cast is. Moreover, the audience in Tamil Nadu do not get attracted by the star value in a film. They are the most intelligent movie audience I have come across and have backed good content across years.
