Sibling revelry is new K’town theme
After horror comedies and crime thrillers, movies that revolve sibling love have been striking the right chord among the Tamil audience.

It is not only the romantic films and crime thrillers that have raked in the moolah in Kollywood. In recent months, Kollywood’s content based on sibling love has been one of the most successful formulas. Karthi’s Kadaikutty Singam, Sivakarthikeyan’s Namma Veetu Pillai and GV Prakash-Siddharth’s Sivappu Manjal Pachai are some of the classic examples. In the next six months, Tamil cinema will witness many more films like Thambi (Karthi and Jyotika), Vaanam Kottatum (Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh and Shanthnu Bhagyaraj) and Sasikumar’s untitled film with Jyotika. Talking about Vaanam Kottatum, director of the film Dhana said, “It is a warm storyline that happens within a family. The film will have beautiful portions between Vikram Prabhu and Aishwarya Rajesh, who play siblings. The audience have always embraced a film that talks about siblings, along with a strong content.”
Actor-director Sasikumar has been a flag-bearer of such films. Be it Nadodigal or Kodi Veeran, the sibling sentiment in his films have gelled with the audience big time. His next film too that will have him playing Jyotika’s brother is about sibling love. “People still talk about Sivaji sir’s Paasamalar because of the sibling sentiment. When you talk about relationships, the story is easily relatable to the audience. That is why films that talk about a mother’s relationship with her children or a brother-sister relationship have succeeded at the box-office. A single child watching the film will get to know what it is like to have a sibling. A lot of people now stay away from their families and films like these evoke their emotions. When I shoot for my films outdoor, people do not call me Sasikumar sir. They call me Sasikumar anne. The reason is because when I make such films it is easier for them to accept me as their brother, which is overwhelming,” he elaborated.
Karthi Sivakumar’s Kadaikutty Singam is a story that revolves around a brother and his sisters. The actor said that he got reminded of his sisters while shooting for the movie. “If I ask Suriya for a glass of water, he would give a kick on my back. I regret not having an elder sister. It was the akkas in my neighbourhood who pampered me during my childhood. I used to be their bodyguard whenever they went to school or libraries. Also, I have cousins in Coimbatore, who looked after care of me whenever I visit them during vacation. I share a different chemistry with each of my sisters,” he said with a smile.
