Despite its visual extravaganza, Action fails to impress
After almost four years since the release of Aambala, director Sundar C and Vishal have joined hands for yet another action entertainer titled Action. However, this time, it looks like the makers have spent a bomb to film the stunt sequences and it is quite evident from the very first scene.
Chennai
The project relies on its technical brilliance, of which some of the shots are in top-notch quality. That apart, the script lacks punch and fails to engage the audience during crucial scenes.
Action begins with actor Vijay Sethupathi’s AV, where he conveys that the film will not feature any subtitles and the makers have chosen Tamil as the medium of communication even for the locals in foreign countries. Within a few seconds, the audience is taken to Istanbul, where Vishal and Tamannaah are being chased by the country’s police officials.
The story goes back in time where we are introduced to Colonel Subhash (Vishal), the son of the state’s Chief Minister (Pala Karuppiah). In the next scene, Subhash’s elder brother Saravanan (Ramki) organises a political meet in Chennai and invites a minister from the national party as the Chief Guest. Things become serious, when a terror group plants bomb on stage and destroys the life of Subhash’s brother and his girlfriend (Aishwarya Lekshmi).
A CCTV footage, helps Subhash and his colleague Diya (Tamannaah) to track down the professional killer in London, who was also involved in his brother’s death. However, trouble begins, when he realises that the man behind this attack is India’s most wanted terrorist Syed Ibrahim Malik (Kabir Singh), who resides in Pakistan. Will Subhash manage to defeat him or get succumb to his political power?
The saving grace for Action is the visuals and the high-octane action sequences. Especially, in the first half, where Vishal goes in search of Kiara (Akanksha Puri), a professional killer in London. Otherwise, the plot of the film is nothing new and is similar to some of the action entertainers we have seen in the 90s. The placement of the songs is a big let-down and doesn’t get along well with the mood of the film. Both Aishwarya Lekshmi and Tamannaah deliver what’s offered to them and play their part decently.
Kabir Singh too, gives a tough fight and pulls out a memorable performance as a terrorist. However, there are way too many villains in the film that make it difficult for the audience to connect with his character. The film also tests our patience after a point due to its lengthy duration. HipHop Tamizha’s background score is decent and fits in perfectly for this genre of film. Vishal’s performance is definitely a plus for the film and he has pulled off most difficult stunt sequences with ease. Overall, the film is a one-time watch.
