No filter: Chennai’s ‘tall girl’ turns her life events into a musical

One could call it a coincidence or say that time has finally come for tall women to shine. Just the way Netflix’s recent release Tall Girl became quite a hit, Chennai’s very own tall girl Shruti Parasuraman’s blog has been received very well.

What began as an outlet for her frustration resulted in a dedicated fan following for her ability to express her views on issues with societal norms, with a good dose of humour. City-based theatre group Evam’s co-founder Sunil Vishnu, who read her blog, found it to be an accurate social commentary with oodles of humour. He wanted to convert her blog into a play, which became an audience favourite at Short and Sweet Festival. Now, the Tale of a Tall Girl, a musical comedy play will debut on October 5.

The play opens with an anecdote from Shruti’s life, where she meets the first guy her mum asks her to, who proceeds to say that he has an ex who dumped him and that he would drop everything and go if that ex ever wants him back! With characters based on her real life experiences, this play, if it is anything like her blog, is certainly bound to be a laugh riot. Especially the scenes, in which she interacts with her mother based on real life incidents, are quite telling of the mindset of the previous generation, with regard to arranged marriages. When Shruti rejects the profiles of a few men based on their photographs, her mother is quick to quip, “Don’t worry, you can always get used to his face!”. With many precious and amusing responses like this one, it is no wonder that this mother-daughter relationship is something everyone is able to relate to.

At 5 ft 11 inches, Shruti has had myriad experiences due to her height. Through her blog and plays, she has been making quite an impact on people in the city. From men who have never considered dating or marrying women taller than them changing their minds, to the older generation being more conscious of their casual barbs — she has been able to cause change. Bonding over shared experiences can have huge impact on us as humans. If you want to have a laugh and a great time, while simultaneously expanding your world view, this is a play you must see!

Popular city model gets engaged to businessman
Another one is taken! Popular city model Ashwini Kumar, aka Dolly, as she is known to friends and family, just got engaged to Kavin Venkatesh, a businessman from Chennai. With the engagement, they have finally made their relationship Insta-official, leaving a lot of fans heartbroken. Ashwini’s brother hosted a bash at his restaurant to celebrate the two lovebirds with friends and family. After a whirlwind trip to Delhi, where the bride and her bridesmaids shopped to their hearts’ content for trousseau worthy of a model, they jetted off to Goa on their bachelorette trip. Ashwini’s fans will have to wait and see what she will be wearing for her big day. Meanwhile, the girls are stirring up a social media storm with their bachelorette pictures. The bride squad is filled with models and influencers and I, for one think that this wedding will be picture perfect!
