Now Suriya’s Kaappaan faces plagiarism charges
Writer John Charles has filed a case against the makers of Kaappaan accusing them of story theft.
Chennai
It’s been not even a day since the plagiarism controversy surrounding Vijay starrer Bigil came to an end. The city Civil Court dismissed the petition filed by director KP Selva accusing director Atlee of plagiarising his story, that of a sports drama.
Now, yet another Tamil film, which is all set to hit the screens on September 20 has been accused of plagiarism. According to reports, the story of Suriya’s upcoming film Kaappaan, which also features Malayalam Superstar Mohanlal in the lead, is apparently not original and a case has been filed against the filmmaker in the High Court. KV Anand is said to have copied the script of writer John Charles, who had earlier registered a similar script with the Writers’ Union under the title Saravedi.
While the Writers’ Union is yet to look into the issue, the court has adjourned the case to September 4. When DT Next tried to reach the makers of the film, a spokesperson from Lyca Productions, said, “John Charles’ accusation is baseless. The plot of Kaappaan is completely different and it has nothing to do with his script. He will realise it once the film hits the screens next month. We can’t even justify now as it will be giving away the plot. We have decided to remain calm as truth is on our side.”
Kaappaan is touted to be a political thriller, in which Mohanlal plays the role of a Prime Minister. Arya, Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani and Samuthirakani are also part of this project.
